EUGENE, Ore. — The school year is still young, but drivers in Eugene are failing to break some old habits, including failing to stop for bus safety lights.
In the last two weeks, Eugene police have pulled over several drivers for failing to stop and remaining stopped while the red safety lights are flashing on school buses.
Some drivers told police they don’t clearly understand the rule specifically when it relates to a wide road or median. In these cases. you must stop.
“Just because there’s a double yellow line or a safety median in the middle of the roadway, that doesn’t mean that a child is going to make a movement in an unpredictable direction and put themselves in a position of risk,” said Office Nate Pieske, Eugene Police Department.
Failing to stop for bus safety lights carries a $500 fine.
